The objective. To highlight problems of early diagnosis and prophylaxis for cutaneous melanoma. Reference incidence, survival and mortality rates in Russia are represented. The need for enhancement of commitment of physicians and nursing staff in primary health care institutions for diagnosis of early-staged malignant tumors, particularly melanoma, is demonstrated.

Material and methods. Main risk factors for cutaneous melanoma and clinical signs and criteria for differential diagnosis with different nevi are outlined. We reviewed preventive programs for early diagnosis of melanoma including education of self-examination and precise routine follow-up of patients with increased risk which allow both preventing disease and increasing efficacy of cancer treatment.

Conclusions. Targeted regular preventive measurements of medical association of primary health care institutions allow determining patients with pre-clinical lesions with significantly increased chances for efficacy of cancer treatment and good prognosis.

KEY WORDS: cutaneous melanoma, risk factor, system «ABCDE», prophylaxis.
